    Greater Than Control

Some truths rise like slow sunrises; quiet, steady, almost unnoticed until the light lands on something hidden. Control is one of those truths. It often slips into the ordinary corners of life without much effort, becoming part of how someone moves through their day. The desire to keep things safe, predictable, or peaceful feels so natural. Yet beneath those efforts, something deeper is often stirring.

Paul’s words in Colossians speak into that very place. When he speaks about husbands, wives, children, workers, and leaders, the focus reaches past daily roles and lands on the deeper spaces of the heart. The kitchen table. The late-night conversation. The drive home after a long day. These moments become classrooms where the heart is gently shaped, sometimes without anyone even realizing it.

Control finds its way into these moments with surprising ease. Sometimes it speaks loudly through frustration or worry. Other times it hides behind a good intention, trying to fix, protect, or steer something that was never meant to be held so tightly. At the root of it all is often a quiet fear: fear of loss, fear of chaos, fear of being misunderstood, fear of the unknown.

Scripture is honest about this. The pull toward control has been part of the human story since the beginning. Yet through every generation, God continues to invite people into trust. The invitation was steady. It was personal. It was filled with the assurance that God’s presence remains close at every turn.

Philippians 2 offers a beautiful glimpse of this through the life of Jesus. He carried Himself with calm confidence, moving through each moment fully attuned to the Father. His posture wasn’t shaped by fear or by clinging to power. It was shaped by love. That picture draws the heart toward a quieter way of living: one rooted in surrender rather than strain.

It raises gentle questions for anyone paying attention:

What would life feel like if trust guided the inner world more than fear?

Where might God be inviting a loosened grip?

These questions create space for God to speak. They reveal the places where the Spirit is already working. Surrender begins in quiet ways. It may start with a deep breath or a single prayer whispered in a moment of tension. Relief often follows. Shoulders soften. Thoughts slow down. The weight that once felt overwhelming begins to ease.

Many have lived moments like this, when tension fills a room, when someone’s choices stir worry, or when a situation simply refuses to bend. The instinct to tighten control rises quickly, yet even then, there is another invitation underneath the noise. A pause. A breath. A quiet whisper from God that says, “Let Me hold this with you.”

This is where deeper healing begins, especially within the old stories carried from childhood or past seasons. Stories like:

    “Everything depends on me.”

“If I don’t act, things will fall apart.”

    “Strength earns love.”

    “My voice doesn’t matter.”

God gently writes new stories in their place. Stories filled with belonging and peace. Stories carried by truth rather than pressure. These new truths begin to reshape a person from the inside out, slowly loosening the grip of fear.

As this change takes root in the heart, it moves naturally into relationships as well. Homes become gentler spaces. Conversations feel safer. Leadership grows quieter and more grounded. Churches begin to reflect the kind of community Jesus envisioned—people learning to trust God in real time, with open hands and hopeful hearts.

Holiness starts to feel like freedom taking shape; steady, unforced, and deeply alive.

So perhaps the question for this week is simple:

Where might Jesus be inviting trust in a place that has felt heavy or uncertain?

Let the question linger without rushing for an answer.

And as it settles, may there be a growing awareness that God is already present in the uncertain places. He is steady in the tension, near in the fear, and patient with every step toward surrender.

    His presence is here.

    His peace is near.

And His way will always be greater than control.
